Groundbreaking Sustainability: The Udermann’s Farming Journey

Alex and Kirsten Udermann of Meadowbrook Dairy, Inc., in Stearns County, Minnesota, are making waves in sustainable agriculture. Their commitment to conservation, regenerative farming and community education has earned them recognition as a 2025 GroundBreaker of the Year honorable mention.

As dedicated stewards of the land, they have implemented leading-edge conservation practices, fostered soil health and worked tirelessly to promote sustainable farming methods among their peers.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Farming

The Udermann family operates a diversified, multi-generation farm, working alongside Alex’s parents, John and Mary Lou, and his brother Jake and wife Sam. Their operation includes dairy cows, feeder steers and row crops, along with custom manure hauling, no-till planting and cover crop seeding services. They also sell beef directly to consumers, ensuring transparency and connection between farm and table.

Their leadership in conservation practices has earned them multiple accolades, including Kirsten’s recognition as Women Farmer of the Year at the 2024 Minnesota Farmfest. Committed to regenerative agriculture, they implement practices that conserve water, improve soil health and biodiversity, and optimize nutrient management. Their efforts led them to become the first farm in Minnesota to receive all five endorsements through the Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program, covering integrated pest management, soil health, wildlife, irrigation water management and climate-smart farming.

Industry Recognition & Community Impact

Their conservation-driven approach has garnered statewide recognition. The Udermanns were named the 2024 Stearns County Outstanding Conservationists and the 2024 Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Outstanding Conservationists. They were also top four finalists for the Minnesota Leopold Conservation Award, underscoring their commitment to soil health and sustainability.

Beyond their farm, Alex and Kirsten actively educate fellow farmers and the public on sustainable agriculture. Hosting field days, leading industry discussions and participating in cooperative efforts, they ensure their knowledge and experience benefit the broader ag community. They also give back by donating meat to local community efforts and volunteering to educate youth about food production and livestock care.

Sharing Knowledge & Inspiring Others

Alex recently served on a panel at Compeer Financial’s GroundBreakers Conference, sharing insights on overcoming challenges, implementing conservation practices and growing a farm business. Their story of perseverance and innovation is an inspiration to other young farmers navigating the complexities of modern agriculture.

Compeer’s GroundBreaker of the Year award recognizes young, beginning and small farmers who make a significant impact on agriculture and their communities. As a 2025 honorable mention, the Udermanns received a $2,500 award in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

The financial cooperative is dedicated to supporting the next generation of farmers by offering customized financing solutionsgrants and educational resources tailored to the needs of young, beginning and small farmers.
