Uncertainty Is the Norm, and That Takes a Toll
The pressures on today’s farmers go beyond weather and workloads. In 2025, producers continue to confront a volatile and unpredictable economic environment. These challenges stack on top of daily operational demands, isolation and the emotional weight of carrying a multi-generational legacy.
Farmers are statistically more vulnerable to mental health issues. According to the National Rural Health Association, farmers are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. Rural areas have seen a rise in suicide rates, highlighting the urgent need for accessible mental health resources in our rural communities.

System-Wide Support Through the Farm Credit Network
Compeer’s dedication to farmer well-being is part of a larger, collective mission embraced across the Farm Credit System.
The Farm Credit Council actively supports numerous initiatives designed to address farm stress and mental health across rural America:
- Farm Family Wellness Alliance: Through Farm Foundation, Farm Credit helped launch this alliance offering Together all, a 24/7 peer-to-peer online support community with an agriculture-specific subgroup, and Personal Assistance Services, which provides free self-guided tools and one-on-one counseling.
- Rural Resilience Training: Developed in partnership with American Farm Bureau, National Farmers Union and university Extensions, this free course helps farmers and their families recognize stress, communicate effectively and connect with mental health resources.
- AgriSafe’s FarmResponse Program: Farm Credit supports this specialized training for mental health professionals to improve care for producers and promote the AgriStress Provider Directory.
These resources are available nationwide and are designed to be easily accessible to residents of rural communities.
